Monthly Mushroom & Plant ID Walk

   Join Jared, acupuncturist and nature enthusiast, for an engaging and interactive ID walk where we will focus on learning our native mushrooms and native plants! We will start out at Smile and take a wander through our local walking trails and local woods. Come learn about our Natural Neighbors! Please be prepared for a gentle walk through nature, remembering to bring along water, a small collection basket, bug spray, and any other essentials you might need.

Moxa harvest! (On your own)

   This is the third day of the third lunar month, the first of the traditional days to harvest mugwort for moxa. Posting this for to share information only. Harvest away, and dry the mugwort for later moxa making!

Medicinal Mushrooms at Charm City Farms

   This workshop is a deep exploration into the world of mushrooms and mushroom medicine. Through lecture and demonstration, we’ll explore the life cycle of fungi, the basic biology and ecology of mushrooms (to understand why mushrooms are medicinal for us), and how growing conditions affect their medicinal and nutritional content.

   We’ll then explore the amazing medicinal qualities that come from mushrooms, especially local wild species, and how to prepare them.

   Participants will taste some amazing medicinal mushroom teas and learn easy ways to use mushrooms for immune health. Participants will also walk away with samples of locally harvested medicinal mushroom tea.

Mushroom & Plant ID Walk at RUlz Fitness

   Join Jared, acupuncturist and nature enthusiast, for a walk around Schoolhouse Pond in Upper Marlboro. This class is put on by Rulz Fitness, a great local dance and yoga studio.  We will have an engaging and interactive ID walk where we will focus on learning our native mushrooms and native plants! Come learn about our Natural Neighbors! Brewing for Beginners: Dandelion Wine, and other Spring Brews

     Brewing wines and meads is an ancient art. In its vast history, brewing alcohols ranged from the practical to the illegal, from the profane to the sacred. In this class, we will learn tried and true techniques for making wines and meads the easy way. Using locally-harvested wild and cultivated herbs, we will design and create custom recipes as well as ancient recipes that you can replicate in your own kitchen.
    Brewing can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be, and this class will focus on simple to medium scale brewing.  The information presented is simple so that participants can immediately put the knowledge to use at home.

Moxa Seminar - Preparing Mugwort 

  Mugwort is used for many things - as an herb to help with dream work, as a medicinal tea for a variety of ills, and also prepared as Moxa - a loose herb that is burned to warm and stimulate acupuncture points as well as various injuries and pains. We will discuss the Mugwort plant, its history of use and its properties. Various ways to utilize Moxa, including first aid and other conditions that Moxa is particularly good for will be discussed. 
  This is the full class on how to prepare the Mugwort herb into Moxa, and prepare homemade remedies. Mugwort is traditionally harvested only two days of the year, and we will have a free harvesting event on the second of these days, Tuesday May 30th.
